Richard Petty at the Winston Cup Auction

This photo shows retired driver Richard Petty signing autographs for fans at the sixth annual Winston Cup Preview, a benefit for AirCare and Brenner Children’s Hospital. Nearly 25,000 people, coming from 27 states, paid $10 a piece to attend and meet 50 former and current NASCAR drivers at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem on January 14, 1995. North Carolina Baptist Hospital has held this event annually since 1990, with the first one being held at the Benton Convention Center. Because of getting bigger and better every year, the crowd was moved two years later to the Joel Coliseum in 1992. For the fans, having the chance to meet their favorite drivers was not the preview’s only appeal. They also had the opportunity to see the drivers’ new cars and colors before the start of racing season, and the best part is that they could bid for car parts and other racing memorabilia at the auction. Dale Earnhardt’s uniforms he wore when he won the Winston Select 500 went for $6,000 becoming the highest-priced item in 1995.
